I have been short sighted ever since I was a small child, but nobody ever guessed until I had my first eye test aged 10. I could read close up all right and we had no TV so I thought I was normal. I only knew Bambi’s mother had died in the film because I heard the shot. I thought the cinema was very over-rated because you couldn’t really see anything, and I learned to guess what was going on around me by intuition and developing very good social awareness.
Once I got them, I wore my glasses mostly up my sleeve because I hated them, and at 15 I started wearing hard contact lenses, which opened my eyes in more ways than one. I wore these until 2008, when I was 55 and I decided to take the plunge and go for laser eye surgery. The morning after, I woke up and could see everything in my bedroom, and outside the window, without any help for the first time in my life. It was like a miracle, and I have literally never looked back. I have better than 20/20 vision now.
